Understanding Window Performance

U-Factor

The U-Factor, or U-Value, is a measure of the rate of heat transfer through a material, such as a window. The lower the U-Factor, the better the window is at insulating against heat loss. U-Factor is measured on a scale from 0.20 to 1.20, and Ameritech Windows provides windows with U-Factors as low as 0.18 to help you maximize your energy savings.

Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC)

The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures the amount of solar radiation that is allowed to pass through a window. The lower the SHGC, the less solar heat is transmitted through the window, keeping your home cooler in the summer. Ameritech Windows provides windows with SHGC ratings as low as 0.25 to help you keep your home comfortable all year long.

Visible Light Transmittance (VLT)

Visible Light Transmittance (VLT) measures the amount of visible light that is allowed to pass through a window. The higher the VLT, the more natural light is allowed in, making your home brighter and more inviting. Ameritech Windows provides windows with VLT ratings as high as 0.68 to help you bring the outdoors in.

Air Leakage

Air Leakage measures the rate of air infiltration through a window. The lower the air leakage rating, the less air is allowed to escape through the window, helping you conserve energy and reduce your utility bills. Ameritech Windows provides windows with air leakage ratings as low as 0.03 to help you save money and energy.
